DMZ stands for Demilitarized Zone. It is an area between North and South Vietnam that was established during the Vietnam War as a buffer zone to prevent the movement of troops and weapons across the border. The DMZ is a site of historical significance and is home to several museums and landmarks related to the Vietnam War.
Starting from Hue, we will head north along Highway 1 to Quang Tri town, just south of the DMZ. Our first stop will be Long Hung Church, the site of a battle in 1972 between North and South Vietnam referred to as the “Battle of 81 Days and Nights”.
Next, we will take you to the Doc Mieu base, Gio Linh cemetery, and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), where you can see Hien Luong Bridge, Ben Hai River, and the DMZ museum. After visiting the historical sites of the DMZ, we will go to the Vinh Moc tunnels.
The Vinh Moc tunnel is a remarkable feat of engineering built during the Vietnam War by the local people of Vinh Moc to escape the intense bombing by the US Army. It stretches nearly 1,500 meters over 3 levels and goes as deep as 23 meters below ground. Today, it’s preserved as a museum where visitors can witness the living conditions of the villagers during the war and see the various rooms and spaces used by them. It’s a powerful reminder of the resilience and ingenuity of the people who lived through the war.
Between 1966 and 1972, the US Army dropped over 9,000 tons of bombs in this area, which is an average of 7 tons of bombs per person. To survive, the local people built a network of tunnels and moved underground. The tunnels stretch nearly 1,500 meters over 3 levels and go as deep as 23 meters below ground.
In the afternoon, we will drive through the countryside and along the coast, where you can see rice paddies, farms, magnificent ocean views, and much more. We will stop occasionally for photo opportunities, ocean swims, or just to stretch your legs.
Around 3:30 to 4:00 PM, we will return to Hue, and the driver will drop you off at your hotel or another preferred location.
